Love & Hate

Here is today's question: Can love and hate coexist in ones heart? In other words, can I love a person while hating them at the same time?

I think towards the end of my relationship with my ex-fiance, I came close to feeling both towards her. I loved her, but I hated being with her.

God Bless

Matthew I wonder if that was anger and not true hatred. I think true hatred is a decision like true love, only a decision to destroy instead of edify. I would have to answer no, they're incompatible.

Hi Matthew, thanks for the words.

Kc, interesting insights.

Hi Jayne, thanks for your comments. Do you have any particular verses that would demonstrate that reality?

I'm thinking probably not.
My definition of love is wanting the best for someone and looking for their good, setting my intention toward that end. So how can I have my mind set that way that and have it not set that way at the same time?

Ah, when we talk about feelings of love, that is another story because we get into emotions and they are utterly unpredictable and senseless at times.

I too would say no they cannot co exist, either you love them or hate them. You can love the person and not like their ways, but hate them, I have to say no.

Hi Jim,
I'm inclined to think yes, because God so loves the world, yet a part of the world is sin which God hates. Well, GFTD(gone for the day), nice to hear the variuos insights.

Todd, I would also like to extend a warm welcome to you for stopping by and leaving your comment.

I think God may perhaps be able to love and hate at the same time. However as finite being racked with the sin nature, do you really think we can honestly love and hate a certain individual at the same time?

God bless,
Jim

Jim,
"However as finite being racked with the sin nature, do you really think we can honestly love and hate a certain individual at the same time?"

No. I suppose at the flesh level both our love and our hate would be carnal natured. And I suppose, our responsibility after having recieved our Spiritual gift, is to contend with love, and leave all else to our all-knowing and just judge, Christ.

Hi Todd, consider this one:

Can we love God and hate our brother at the same time?

God bless,
Jim

Hi Jim,
No, not our brothers/sisters in Christ. But I suppose it could happen where we love God, but find ourselves hating someone in the world and then, upon becoming aware of that, needing to consciously reset our minds back toward the Spirit. It's not an easy short answer is it. Todd

To truly love anyone we need the love of Christ to flow from us. Our own carnal love is much too shallow and selfish. All the commandments hang upon loving God and our neighbour as ourselves. That definitely cannot be done in our flesh.

Blessings in Christ,
Jim

So true

Daniel said...

God is able to love everyone and hate some people - so I have not trouble with the idea of love and hate existing together.

Sadly most of us are all too willing to adopt an easter duality - the idea that love and hate are opposites that one cannot love and hate at the same time. Such a notion is hogwash.

Hate is not the opposite of love - if such things could have opposites, indifference would be much closer to love's opposite than hate, and frankly, it not surprisingly it would be the opposite of hate as well.

That is supposed to be an "eastern duality" - sigh.

Daniel, can you love God and hate your pastor at the same time?

You've heard the expression, "he's the person you'd love to hate". Weird but true. Sometimes I feel the same towards someone in my office, and I wish I could understand that feeling.

That is an interesting one! ??

There will always be people that push our nerves but I think the point is that our love for God is ultimately expressed in our we deal with people.

If our love is simply abstract how do we know it's real?

Thanks for your contribution.
